Personal Marketing Strategy in 5 Steps
Before you begin your job search you should have a plan.
A personal marketing strategy provides you with a plan for your job search campaign.
1. Get to know yourself.
You need to know your strengths and weaknesses, interest areas, likes and dislikes, work environment preferences,
stress factors and personality. You may need to take some form of language or personality test to determine your abilities.
Getting to know yourself is important in order to match your unique personality and character with suitable work.
2. Develop a career plan. Identify your next career steps.
It is essential to know who you are, and what sort of job you're
looking for. Do you need further education or training? Where
will you market yourself? Will you need to relocate to get the job of your choice?
You will need to prepare your Curriculum Vitae (CV) and cover letters
- your marketing tools.
3. Collect Job Leads - find out who you are marketing to.
Identify the type of employers who would be looking for an employee with your
qualifications or more actively, who you want to work for.
You must decide what sources you will use in order to find potential employers.
Everyone has a different opinion on this.
A combination of all methods is advisable:
- apply to suitable job adverts on-line and in the press
- enter your CV in our on-line database
- visit recruitment agencies
- choose and address the desired employers
- active networking
4. Contact your job leads. Generally a CV and a cover letter is the norm, especially if you are responding to an ad.
If you are working with an agency or an executive recruiter, they will set up the meeting between you and the employer.
If you find out about a job lead through a friend or other contact, decide whether to send a resume and cover letter, or to phone the person who is hiring.
Often your contact can advise you.
5. Make the right choice.
Keep in Mind:
Get Feedback
Getting feedback from recruiters and potential employers can help a lot.
Listening to feedback helps to focus efforts or re-consider plans; i.e. reassuring you that you are heading in the right direction.
Don't even be afraid to ask for advice.
Persistence is The Key
Don't be put off by a lack of success. Sometimes it helps to talk it over with a friend.
Keep going, and a rewarding and fulfilling career can be yours.
