Preparation for a Job Interview
Preparation requires recent assessment of skills, interests, values and accomplishments,
updating your CV and researching the targeted company and position.
It includes actual practice of typical interview questions.
Final preparation includes details of dress and appearance. You should also know in detail who and where you are meeting.
Self-assessment
Before the interview it is necessary to reassess current skills, talents, abilities, strengths, weaknesses, interests, and work values.
It is also the time to re-examine accomplishments and achievements, particularly those that may be relevant to a prospective employer.
Updating your CV
Self-assessment helps you to reassess and update your Curriculum Vitae (CV).
Simplify the resume by removing all superfluous and / or irrelevant material and work at getting it onto one or at most 2 pages.
Focus on what you have done and what you can do for the prospective employer. Be certain it is error-free.
Research
Use every possible means to learn all you can about the company and position.
Go online to the company's Web site as well as competitors' sites. Research the Company and its products
- any information you can obtain could give you the edge in an interview.
If you are going for an interview through a recruitment consultancy, they should ensure that you have all the necessary background information regarding function,
location, size of company, and any other details which will help you succeed, such as whether the interview will be conducted by the personnel department
or a line manager and in which language.
Prepare for the Interview Questions
Prepare to discuss at least the most frequently asked interview questions and
questions regarding your CV:
your interest in this field
your interest in this company
your interest in this position
your greatest weakness
your lack of related experience
your lack of leadership experience
your record of job-hopping
Prepare Questions to Ask
These questions should reflect your research on the company and position and should not include questions where answers are readily available (web site).
Unless you know what you are doing, do not ask about salary or benefits.
Final Preparations
Know the culture of the organization for which you are to be interviewed and dress accordingly.
A business suit is always acceptable. Be certain that your clothing is clean and well pressed.
Minimize accessories. Remember: less is more. Bring a small notebook for notes, but keep note-taking to a minimum.
Ask about timeframes for filling the position, how and when you will be notified, and if they would like additional information or materials from you.
Follow-up
You can send a thank-you note within 24-48 hours after your interview.
Use the thank you note to reiterate your interest and to emphasize your specific qualifications for the position.
